Black curls maybe small but they certainly have a big kick so we would recomend adding a small amount at time with the added bonus of retaining the tannins without using lots of diffrent botanicals 

Botanicals are not just great for tannin your water they have fantastic health benifits such as they have antibacterial propertys stress relieving antifungal propertys aid in breeding natural food source and natural hiding places 

Alder  are roughly around 3/4" in size 

Botanicals can be added straight away into your aquarium where they will float for a while or until they sink to the bottom
To speed up this process you can simply boil the botanicals in a old saucepan for a couple of minutes.

Over time the botanicals will slowly degrade and can remain in your aquarium
